Effective treatment exists

Addiction—to alcohol, drugs, or any other substance or behavior—is a chronic, progressive, clinically recognized illness. The good news is that it can be treated very effectively. However, effective addiction treatment, as is the case with all chronic diseases, requires active participation from the afflicted individual. As an example, consider a person with diabetes. If left untreated, this person will die from the disease. But if the individual is properly diagnosed and educated, he or she can eat right, perform daily blood sugar tests, take medication (insulin) when necessary, and live a life that is unaffected in any meaningful way by the disease. Similarly, addicts who actively participate in their recovery on a daily basis are free to live their lives however they choose, reaching their full potential in every way.
